Notes

Abstract:
This thesis is a formal and thematic analysis of Werner Herzog's film Everyone for himself and God against all (Jeder fur sich und Gott gegen alle, 1974). The work begins by situating Herzog's film within the larger context of the historical material, the other adaptations thereof, and as consistent of Herzog's other films. From there a more direct analysis of the film is commenced. The main themes analyzed are language, education and ordering processes, the creation of an experience, and the attempts to break out from meaning. The end result of all this discussion is the clear picture that Herzog creates a comprehensive critique of man's alienation from the world and although there are manners to escape this alienation temporarily (music, images, nature, and even the experience of the film itself), escaping permanently is questionable.
