Notes

Abstract: The purpose of this project is to study the interaction between nanotubes suspended in polystyrene and polarized laser radiation with a final goal to find a simple method for manipulating carbon nanotubes. Manipulating carbon nanotubes is very difficult but necessary for them to be useful in nano-electronics and materials science. A laser process which creates nanometer scale ripples in thin films of polymers is used on a thin film of polystyrene and carbon nanotubes in order to exert a force on the nanotubes and cause them to align along the ripples generated by this method. The possible effects of polishing lines on this process were also examined. While the results are inconclusive, several avenues for future work are identified.
