Abstract: |
In my thesis I develop a camping-based, outdoor education program for Sarasota County public schools. In the first chapter examine the theory of experiential education, which is commonly used in outdoor education programs. The second chapter discusses different types of outdoor programs that are already in existence, their benefits and disadvantages, and individual goals. In the third chapter I present my proposed program, relying on the theory and programs discussed in the previous chapters. The proposed program is applied to the Sarasota County high school curriculum. The new program is split into three time periods: the pre-trip planning period, the week-long camping trip, and post trip/debriefing activities. The program's greatest asset to the traditional schooling model is that it provides an opportunity for traditional curriculum to be reinforced in the outdoors in an experiential setting. In addition to the academic benefits, the program provides a chance for students to develop their intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. |
