Abstract: The first half of this thesis provided background infonnation by tracing the field of archaeology in China from it earliest fonn (Chin-shih-hsueh) to the refonm era following the death of Mao Zedong. The second half focuses the development of contemporary Chinese archaeology (Cultural Resources Management and salvage archaeology), and its relation to current heritage concerns and preservation issues. This thesis examines the social and political factors that contributed to the development of Chinese archaeology; discusses issues in the archaeological objectives of the Chinese government today; and examines the notion of authenticity and its relevance to China's future
