Abstract: |
My senior project evolved from an analysis of Aaron Copland's song-cycle for soprano, Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson, into a performance of the same work. I sang all but one of the songs in the January 2007 performance that is included here on compact disc. The accompanying essay investigates the negotiation that occurs between the voices of the composer, Aaron Copland, and the poet, Emily Dickinson, during the process of composition. It also provides a self-reflection, examining the many negotiations that I, as performer, must consciously resolve--such as navigating between Dickinson's morphological text, Copland's demanding music, and my own vocal possibilities. |
