Notes

Abstract: This thesis, an ecological anthropology of the Israeli National Water Carrier, will attempt to elucidate how peoples' changing understanding of themselves, their physical environment, and their place within it has interacted with the actual changes in the environment over time in Israel from the end of the Ottoman period through the completion of the NWC in 1964, as well as how these ideological underpinning continue to affect Israel and the Palestinian Territories today. An examination of the history of the region, combined with the unpacking of the development of Zionist environmental ideology will be used for this task, combined with my own observations from ethnographic field work in Israel.
