Notes

Abstract: This thesis examines the recent and developing controversy over a landfill proposed alongside the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail in Lowndes County, Alabama, an impoverished and predominantly African-American community. In examining the controversy in relation to factors that have historically perpetuated environmental racism as well as factors that have historically supported environmental justice, this thesis suggests that the race-dynamics which influence environmental justice struggles at the community level are more intricate and complex than previously suggested in the environmental justice literature, a possibility to which environmental justice scholars are beginning to devote greater attention.
