Abstract: This thesis has three goals. The first of these is to explore how the reclining female nude became a fruitful genre for many artists throughout history. As such, this topic is used as a means to delve into many different time periods, social movements, and key concepts. This leads to the second goal of this thesis, which is to make the connection between history and the art being discussed. To this end, this thesis uses historical overviews at the beginning of each chapter to frame the discussion of the artwork in some general history in order to understand what inspired it. The third and final goal of this thesis is to trace how the ancient Greeks and Romans influenced Western Civilization. By briefly discussing their accomplishments and devoting the first chapter to what is arguably the first female nude of consequence in history, this thesis seeks to explore how Classical ideas planted the seeds of Western Civilization.
