Abstract: This project consists of over thirty interviews with Sarasota residents on the subject of community gardens. It examines data about the operation of and motivation for five existing community gardens in Sarasota County. Terms such as Ecological Footprint, community food assessment, local foods, and community gardens are defined and discussed. The issue of poverty and fresh food access in relationship to the food gap is briefly addressed. Based on the interviews and outside research, suggestions are offered for future improvement of community gardens and gardening programs in Sarasota County. This paper concludes that, while community gardens should not be the only answer to Sarasota's needs for community building and local food production, Sarasota County offers extensive support for community gardens and what is needed is a grass-roots movement from citizens.
