Abstract: |
This thesis explores Chinese food in Lima, Peru as a marker of identity and as a cultural tool capable of achieving social change. Through a discussion of Chinese immigration and food in Peru from a historical political economic perspective and an ethnographic examination of a contemporary Chinese restaurant owner in Lima, I examine the intricate role food as a symbol of ethnic and national identity in the modern world. Ultimately, I argue that Chinese food, chifa, not only transcends traditional anthropological concepts of culture and operates simultaneously as a symbol of Chinese and Peruvian identity, but that it also allows Chinese Peruvians to state a position of importance in Peruvian society. |
