Abstract: |
A parallel between the politics of identity and the processes of creative expression is conveyed by comparing the balance between traditional and improvised expression in arrullo songs. This balance both reinforces traditional practices and allows them to adapt to present circumstances in order to stay relevant within community life. Musical religious celebrations called arrullos, historically tied to Afro-Ecuadorian ancestry, are portrayed through ethnographic description and informant dialogue. The focus on the arrullo as both a song and celebration is described in an attempt to appreciate the complexity of how traditions survive in the processes of accommodation and resistance. |
