Abstract: Composure is comprised of 41 paintings, nine sculptures, and this body of text. The visual works are process-oriented pieces influenced by my conception of a manner of viewing the world which relies heavily on the influence of ingrained ideology in order to elucidate significance in contemporary objects and events. Initially, I was influenced by a number of artists and writers who are, in a variety of ways, similarly concerned with iconographic significance as it relates to the perception of self and others. My work, written and visual, is influenced by a feminist style of writing which privileges the possibility of multiple, and possibly incompatible, conclusions over a linear discourse intent on providing underlying certainty. Finally, these pieces are influenced by the incapacity of language to communicate things clearly to reflect in their permutations a lack of ultimate conviction. Rather than explicate the intention within individual pieces, I have attempted to articulate the relationship between the process and the work, and the sources of thought which led to the development of said process. Together, I feel these pieces of information provide an entrance to the work which incorporates my own motivation for, and understanding of, the body of work, but does not limit the individual pieces to a discussion of a precise emotional compulsion from which they develop.
