Abstract: |
The work of this thesis consists of five large paintings (each approximately 5' x 12') and various sculptures with three being included in the show. The visual work has come to feed off itself using what has come before or what is currently being done as a content generator. There is an interplay between sculpture and painting. There is no definite starting point however; the sculpture and painting can be both an end or used as a beginning. Contemporary influences have come mainly in the form Julie Mehretu and Franz Ackerman. Influences of more general visual instincts include many artists of geometric abstraction. Cezanne, Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, and many futurists along with the sculptors David Smith, Anthony Caro, and Martin Puryear round out the notables. Written Component serves as a communication of how and why I made what I consider key decisions for this body of work. Early work is considered heavily in the beginning of the painting section as decisions were made in those paintings about both composition and color that serve as the basis for most of my work today. |
