Abstract: |
The purpose of this study is to explore the ways in which female athletes navigate gender specific and sports specific role expectations. Face to face interviews were conducted with six female athletes between the ages of 18 and 20 in an effort to explicate and analyze the navigation process. It is determined that the women interviewed are in fact navigating a double-bind of conflicting sports specific and gender specific sociocultural norms, values, and behaviors. What would appear on the surface to be interrole conflict is actually situational androgyny; the ability to apply stereotypically masculine or feminine behaviors to a given situation. |
