Abstract: |
This senior project is based on personal accounts of women, who are currently in their college years, reflecting on their adolescent experiences. I have included my own personal writing, which I created between the ages of 13 and 22, as well as a series of interviews with 14 female students at New College between the ages of 18 and 23 during January of 2003. My original work, which appears in boldface text, is fictional; however, the instances mentioned are grounded in reality. The tape-recorded interviews I conducted were as short as 30 minutes and as long as an hour. In these sessions, a series 13 questions were tackled, regarding appearance issues, family matters, recreational outlets, and rejections that interviewees experienced during adolescence. I transcribed these testimonies verbatim and organized them into cohesive formats, like articles or short stories. I began with a lead paragraph and related the story back to its introduction, coming full circle. I led into each interview by choosing a personal piece that corresponded with it. Because of the confidential nature of the project, the names of participants have been replaced with pseudonyms. The appendix consists of an interview questionnaire and an example of the unedited transcription of one of the interviews. |
