Abstract: Walt Disney Studios creates heroines based on the social constructions of the feminine from three distinct eras. In chronicling the animated films, from Snow White in 1937, to Tarzan in 1999, this thesis will accomplish two objectives: first, to use textual analysis of these films to explore how they construct the images of women. Second, to demonstrate that over that last 75 years, although Disney Studios has changed their construction of women, the heroines continue to operate within a traditional maleperspective framework. Walt Disney Studios also utilizes the ancient power of myths and fairy tales as a structure for their films. In conclusion, it is important to note that Walt Disney Studios is an agent of popular culture. Therefore, it is important to understand what they are saying so that we can understand how it effects our lives.
