NEWS RELEASE NEw CoLLEGE SARASOTA, FLORIDA 33578 1 190 -5/10/68 813 / 355-7131 Ref.: Furman c. Arthur FOR RELEASE: SARASOTA--Stephen G. Romero, a second-year student at New College, has been notified that he is one of 61 students chosen nationally as a finalist in a $40,000 Educational Fund Awards Program of the Great Books of the Western World. Top prize in the contest sponsored by Great Books, which is published by Encyclopaedia Britannica, is $5,000. There are 10 prizes of $1,000 each for the next ten top scholars, and the remaining finalists are eligible for $500 prizes. Romero, along with the other winners who represent 30 states and Australia, completed four objective tests and submitted essays based on material in the Great Books. The cash awards are intended to provide assistance for children in college or planning to attend, but there is no limitation as to how the awards may be used. In addition to the cash prizes to the students, a 54-volumn set of the Great Books of the Western World will be given to the schools attended this, the fifth international competition. Final awards will be announced within 30 days. 30
