Arthur FOR USE ON OR BEFORE THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 1968 SARASOTA--Jewish scholar Dr. Ellis Rivkin of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion will give a public lecture Thursday (March 14) at 8 p.m. at New College's Hamilton Center. Dr. Rivkin will give the second lecture in a series made possible by Ben G. Rudolph and bearing his name. Topic for the Thursday talk will be "Jews, Judaism, and the Meaning of History." The talk by the Adolph s. Ochs Professor of Jewish History at Hebrew Union College is the first of two that he will give in the community. Friday evening he will give a talk at Sabbath Eve services at Temple Emanu-El. The series of Rudolph lectures was established last year with the visit of Dr. Harry Orlinsky. Each scholar makes the two public appearances at the college and the and also has a number of informal meetings with students interested in the area of Judaism. Dr. Rivkin is a prolific writer, now working on his second book and with numerous articles on Jewish history already published in various periodicals. Graduated from Johns Hopkins University with honors, Dr. Rivkin returned there to take his doctorate while earning meanwhile a -MORE- PAGE 2 Page 2 degree from Baltimore College. Although he has been a member of the Hebrew Union faculty for 19 years, Dr. Rivkin also has taught at Gratz College and Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate, Dr. Rivkin is a member of many educational and professional societies. 30 - |
