/ NEWS RELEASE NEW COLLEGE SA 'ASOTA, FLORIDA 33578 1 -94 -1/26/68 :u 355-7131 Ref.: Furman c. Arthur FOR U1MEDIATE RELEASE New College's academic program undergoes a thorough review by students and faculty today (Saturday) in the third all-campus conference. !-1ost of the 260 students together with the faculty are participating in a series of discussion groups on 10 different topics relating to the college's educational program. All sessions are being held in the college's Hamilton Center. Objective of the conferences, a college official explained, is to find out how the college is doing in its present program and to try to determine if changes can be made that will offer improvements. Theme for the conference was set last night by Dr. David Riesman Harvard University sociologist who addressed the college community on "Education For V..1hat?" This same question will serve as the topic for two discussion groups during the day. Other discussion groups will take up matters such as areas of study, evaluation of student achievement, the flexible academic calendar, student-faculty relationships, institutionalizing innovation, more


COLLEGE -Page2 the student role in decision-making and evaluation, independent study, the cost of quality education, and the possibility of a non-degree program. Students will serve as chairmen for all of the discussion groups and also will provide reports to the entire community at the conclusion of the day. For all committees there also are faculty chairmen. President John Elmendorf opens the conference at 9 a m and he is expected to review the accomplishments of the previous conferences and to give the college's expectations for this one. 30 -
