Arthur FOR RELEASE SARASOTA--A Haitian who was once a superior of the present dictator will give a two-day seminar on that Caribbean nation at New College Monday and Tuesday. Remy Bastien, now doing special research at the University of Florida, will spend both days meeting with students and discussing all aspects of Haitian life. In 1942, Bastien was named secretary general of the new Haitian Bureau of Ethnology and Dr. Francois Duvalier was one of the assistants. Duvalier went on to become a dictator over the tiny nation. Bastien was educated at the College Saint of Port-au-Prince, later took his M.A. at the Escuela de Antropologia e Historia in Mexico on a Rockefeller Foundation fe_loJship and then took his PhgD. cum laude at the saue institution in 1951 on a Wenner-Gren grant. He has served Haiti as a diplomat, scholar and teacher and has taught at the university level in Mexico, Haitip ico, Colombia. He was formerly Chief of Studies of the Pan Union Interamerican Housing and Planning Center in Bogota. more PAGE 2 NEW COLLEGE Page 2 Bastien has written a number of books on Haitian anc Caribbean life including one on voodoo and its relationship to politics in Haitian life.
