Arthur FOR USE: SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 1968 SARASOTA--Music by Mozart, Brahms and Hugo Wolf will fill the richly paneled music room of College Hall on the New College campus Wednesday evening as the New College String Quartet performs in a benefit concert. Raising funds to provide scholarships so that qualified students may attend and participate in the coming New College Summer Music Festival provides the reason for the evening. On the program for the evening will be Wolf's Italian Serenade followed by Mozart's Quartet in F Major for oboe and strings. Second half of the program will be Brahms' Quartet in A Minor, Opus 51, No. 2. Quartet members are first violinist Paul Wolfe, second violinist Anita Brooker, violist William Magers and cellist Christopher von Baeyer. Soloist with the quartet is well-known oboist Miss Patricia Stenberg. Scene of the concert is the room of the former Charles Ringling Mansion specially designed for musical events. Almost completely paneled in wood and with a teak floor, the room has been the scene of many intimate musical evenings such as the one planned for Wednesday. more PAGE 2 NEW COLLEGE Page 2 After the concert there will be a reception so that the members of the audience may meet the performing artists. The reception will be held in the lounge of College Hall. The New College String Quartet was formed last year to be a musical group in residence on the New College campus. Three of its members teach at the college and all perform with the Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra. Wolfe is the orchestra's conductor. Miss Stenberg, who was a member o f the faculty of the Summer Music Festival for several years, is a principal oboist with three of Florida's symphony orchestras. She is a member of the faculty at the University of South Florida. Some 16 area students have qualified to receive scholarships to the Summer Music Festival. They include students from Riverview and Manatee High Schools, Manatee Junior College and New College. Other scholarships also go to outstanding music students from other areas of the country. Tickets for the benefit are on sale at $5 for adults and $1 for students at the Sport Shop in Sarasota, at Hullingers Music Store in Bradenton and at the Humanities Division offices at New College They also will be available at College Hall on the evening of the concert. Serving on a committee to arrange the concert are Mrs. Dallas w. Dort, chairman; MrsH. L. Mundy, co-chairman; Mrs. Arthur R. Borden, Mrs. John Elmendorf, Mrs. George Petrie, and Mrs. Paul Wolfe. 30 - |
