. N,EW COLLEGE .... / 'NEWS RELEASE FOR RELEASE: SUNDAY HAY 7 19 6 7 NEW COllEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION One of the world's recognized Bible authorities will speak on the New College campus Thursday at 8 P.M. Dr. Harry M. Orlinsky, of Bible at the Nel-l York school of Hebrew Union Institute of Religion, will present to invited guests and the public the first Ben G. Rudolph Lecture in the new Hamilton Center. Dr. Orlinsky, editor-in-chief of the New Translation of the Hebrew Bible for the Jeto1ish Publication Society of America, also was the first Jewish scholar ever invited to take part in an authorized Christian translation of the Bible into English. At the Thursday evening talk, Dr. Orlinsky Hill speak on "The New Age of Bible Translation: Jetrish, Protestant, and Catholic." The appearance of the biblical scholar here is one of a series of lectures planned in the area of Judaic studies to be given on campus and made possible by Ben G. Rudolph of Sarasota. more


NEH COLLEGE Page 2. Dr. Orlinsky will much of Friday in informal meetings and conversations with New College students and faculty. It is also planned that as part of the lecture, his Thursday talk later tV"ill be published by the college. A p;raduate of the University of Toronto, Dr. Orlinsky received his Ph.D. from Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning in 1935. He was a at the University of Pennsylvania from 1931 to 1935 and then became a Fellmv at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem at the HebreH University. Dr. Orlinsky is co-translator of a five-volume English editiort of Rashi's commentary on the Pentateuch. His latest book, Ancient Israel, a study of the society that produced the Bible, published by Cornell University Press. He was the sole Jewish member of the committee of 22 scholars which, in 1952, produced the Revised Standard Version of the Old Testament. He is chairman of the American Friends of the Israel Exploration Society; a Fellow of Princeton University's Council of The Humanities and of the American Academy for Jewish Research; and a member of the Editorial Committees of Jewish Apocryphal Literature and the Society of Biblical Literature. In 1959 and 1960, Dr. Orlinsky read papers by invitation at international conp,resses at Oxford University and Moscow State University.
