/NEW COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C ARTHUR INFORMATION November 11, 1965 Dedication of the just-completed New College S\..rimming pool will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. on the college's East Campus honoring Mr. and Mrs. Courtland H. Hoppin, of Lido Shores. The new pool is an Olympic standard size designed for both competitive swimming and for recreational use by the college community. Construction of the pool, which began in early fall, was made possible by a gift from Mr. and Mrs.Hoppin. Ceremonies will include formal dedication of the net-.1 facility, an ex-hibition of swimming and diving by students, plus a lifesaving demonstration. Following the dedication and exhibition, the pool will formally be opened for use by students. The public is welcome to attend the brief ceremonies and to see the new pool. Twenty-five meters in length, the pool has six lenthwise lanes competition. At the short end of its L-shape, there is a 4eepened portion so that divers may practice tvithout interfering stvimmers. Th,eJ:e are both one-meter and three-meter boards. The outdoor pool is capable of providing filtereQ)heated water and is lighted for night use. Room for filtration equipment was provided when the me-chanica! building for the residence halls was constructed. -more


Pool Dedication Page 2 President John Elmendorf will preside at the dedication and pay tribute to Mr. and }tts. Hoppin for their gift. During the past year the Hoppins have been very close to the student body, entertaining student groups frequently in their home. The swimming exhibition will be arranged by Peter Odell, director of physical activities at New College. Access to parking for the dedication of the pool is through the entrance to the Sarasota-Bradenton Airport. Student guides will direct visitors. The pool will be the first construction specifically for the physical recreation of the New College students although they participate sailing, tennis, golf, lvrestling, basketball and volleyball. Putting on the exhibition of swimming, diving, and lifesaving will be Abby Allgood, Richard John 6'Neil, Rick Von Behren, John Lowe, Steve Hall, Tom Manteufel, Paul Hansma, Jim Frisch, David Allen. Also participating will be Susie Elmendorf, daughter of President and Mrs. John Elmendorf and Brenda Davis, daughter of vice president and Hrs. Paul D. Davis. -30-
