NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C ARTHUR -IN FORMAT/ON FOR P!HEDIATE RELI:ASI: Honorary memberships in the New College alumni body went today to the chairmen of the Manatee and Sarasota County Commissions at special cere-monies on campus. AHarded snecial memberships as honorary alumni were Hanatee County Commission Chairman Dan :rcClure and Sarasota County Commissioner L. L. Parker. Haking the presentation to the county officials as L. Horning, president of the Friends of fre College, sponsors of the honorary alumni auards. Dr. George F. Baughman, president of New College, 'vas unable to be present for the ceremony because of illness. Following the alumni award ceremonies in the Husic Room of College Hall, the special euests, members of the county commissions from each county, plus members of the N e'v College faculty and staff, lunched together in the college dining hall and then toured the campus, including the recently com-pleted East Campus residence halls. Horning, in making the presentation of the honorary memberships, praised the roles of the tvo commissions for their cooperation and support of New College during its founding Noting that he was acting on behalf of President Baughman in making the presentations, Horning said that he expressed the appreciation of the president and the entire college for all that the county commissions had done to help make :Ie'" College possible, -more-

Horning told the officials and others gathered for the ceremony in College Hall that since it would be a number of years before there l..rould be much of a graduate alumni body, the honorary alumni would be asked to think of themselves as Net..r College alumni and to represent the college in their daily lives. He jokingly told the county commissioners that he tms conferring the FNC degree upon them, which he translated as Friend of NeH College. Horning is president of Friends of New College, an independent organization formed to help provide support and resources for the college. -30-
