NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR JNFORMAT/ON FOR RELEASE : SUNDAY, J ULY 18, 1965 Clayton Lane of Sarasota has been appointed Visiting Professor of llumanities at New College and will offer a seminar on classics and cul-tures of Asia during the first term of the 1965-66 academic year. The special seminar group \vill discuss the cultural history of India, China, Southeast Asia, Japan, Persia, and the Arab areas based on reading in the literatures, arts, philosophies, religions, and customs of major Asian cultures. The seminar will provide background in depth for later emphasis on modern and contemporary developments and on American policies and problems in Asia. Lane served at eight diplomatic posts in Asia, Europe, and Africa and at several international conferences. From 1948-50 he headed a re-search and publishing organization concerned with Asia and was chairman of its editorial board. In 1951 he was appointed consultant on India in the [conomic Cooperation Administration in Washington and for two years was Director of the Far East Prog ram of the Iutual Security Agency. He has since initiated Asian studies, both ancient and modern, at St. John's College, Simpson College, and the University of Vermont. -more-

Clayton Lane Page 2 Lane prepared for a diplomatic and teaching career at Stanford and the University of California. lie served durinp, the Twenties for three years in the Department of Commerce in as head of the Information Division covering all geographic areas and as a special assistant to Secretary Herbert Hoover. Hhile in graduate school at Berkeley he taught economics and international relations at St. College and while in \Vashington he lectured in the Foreign Service School of Georgetown Uni versity and at the Army War College. The seminar continue a series begun with the visit to i'lew College of historian Dr. Arnold J. Toynbee during the present academic year. Two other special seminars are to be offered during the coming year. Dr. Crane Brinton of Harvard early in \-lill offer one on the comparative study of revolutions. In the spring of next year, Dr. Vera M. Dean, of the graduate school of Public Administration at New York University will \-lith students in a seminar on the diversity of cultures in political theories, religions, economics, and history. Since coming to Sarasota, Lane has been a consultant to the Office of Special Operations Research, American University, and the Department of the Army on Asian geopolitics. He was one of the group of educators who took part in the 1962 New College Conference on Educational and he presented a series of Ringling lectures on the arts and cultures of Japan at the Asolo Theater in This past year, he was one of the lecturers in the New New Perspectives series. -30-
