_/,NE w COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE: Sunday, May 31, 1964 Election of sumner B. Emerson to the New College Board of Trustees was announced today by chairman Louis H. LaMotte. Emerson, now a resident of Sarasota, is a partner in the New York investment firm, Morgan Stanley & Company. He was elected to serve a three year term on the New College board. He has previously served as a member of the Advance Gifts Committee of the New College Development Fund. An honors graduate of Dartmouth College, Emerson was an executive with the Guaranty Company of New York for 12 years, financial vice president and a director of a group of national insurance firms before becoming a vice president and director of Morgan Stanley & Co., Inc. in 1936. From 1941 until 1960 he was a full partner in the firm and today remains a limited partner of this distinguished investment banking house. Emerson, a Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude graduate of Dartmouth, also is a trustee of Rutgers University. He has been an overseer of the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth and a member of the (more}


-2 -Alumni Council of that ivy league institution. He is a member of the area Ivy League Club. Chairman LaMotte said that the New College trustees would "greatly benefit by the rich experience of sumner Emerson in both educational and financial affairs. "He represents both the national and the local scene," said LaMotte, "and as we are ready to enroll our first s tudent body, these are two of our important areas of influence." The New Hampshire-born Emerson and his wife make their home on Siesta Key, spending their summers at the Pocono Lake Preserve in Pennsylvania. ###
