NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE:!_HURSDAY (August 20, 1964) Dr. Carroll V. Newsom, a trustee of New College, has been named president of Prentice-Hall, Inc., the New York publishing firm. Dr. Newsom joined Prentice-Hall in 1962 as senior vice president after six years as president of New York University. Prentice-Hall's biggest activity has been in educational pub-lishing and Dr. Newsom noted the continuing emphasis when he said, "It is our obligation as a publisher to lead the way in all areas of education, and not merely to follow." The New College trustee and publishing executive told of the firm's research into educational curriculums, procedures and media, and he forecast that Prentice-Hall would be working with educators in many countries of the world in assisting them to meet the needs for better teaching materials. Dr. Newsom, one time mathematics professor, holds numerous directorships in educational organizations, has been Associate Commissioner for Higher and Professional Education in New York state, and is a director of a number of major corporations. He also is the author of eight college textbooks on mathematics and one book called "A University President Speaks Out." Dr. Newsom has been a trustee of New College since 1961. #II#
