Notes
- Abstract:
- This thesis takes a close look at how Jane Austen uses a specific form of character
development to give depth to certain characters in Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield
Park. By using implicit association, Austen is able to create a connection between
character and place to better solidify the personalities of her characters. Elements of the
picturesque and landscaping are discussed in relation to the way Austen creates her
characters’ interior selves. Gendering of rooms is also mentioned in conjunction with this
form of character development. Through this implicit characterization, her characters’
personality traits become explicit.
