Abstract: Princess Charlotte of Wales died at age twenty-one after giving birth to a stillborn son. Their tragic deaths marked the loss of two generations of future rulers. As a result, Charlotte's death was heavily mourned throughout England. Princess Charlotte's tomb monument consists of a strange amalgamation of different motifs. These range from an exposed breast, a clear reference to the Virgin Mary, a portrait-like quality, and shrouded figures. This thesis explores these motifs in an attempt to discern why they may have been used on this largely overlooked monument.

ii DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my mother, Angela Hogan, for all her help and support throughout this process. Hi mo m! Thank you for always being there and listening to my ridiculous problems. Thank you for dragging me out of bed every day in England. Most of all, thank you for saving my life over and over again. I love you.

PAGE 3

iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Above all, I would like to thank Professor Carr asco for her patience a nd constant support. Without her guidance and absolutely genius ideas, my thesis would be nothing compared to what it is now. I would also like to thank Prof essor Cris Hassold for letting me back in the Art History program. Thank you for listeni ng to my problems and suppor ting me through the ups and downs. To dad: it is so hard to thank you for everyt hing you’ve done for me in the past 23 years, but I’m going to try. Thank you so much for providing me with this education and allowing me to study whatever I wanted. Thank you so much for all the help you gave me during that rough month before my Bacc. I love you. To Eugenie Fortier: you are my soul mate and I love you so much. You will never know how much you have helped me these past two years. I am going to miss you so much when you move to New York, but I am so happy for you and I know in my heart that you are going to do great things there. Now because I’m running out of space (and time as usual) I am going to list some wonderfully amazing people who have suppor ted me, made me laugh, and helped me grow up and find myself. In no particular or der thank you to: Erin, Dolan, Nicole, Lucy, Rikki, Christina, Adam, Tom, Jordan, Dexter Brian, Zach E., Zach M., Pat, Lee, Stu,
