Notes

Abstract:
This thesis examines what motivates individuals to become involved in social change organizations. These organizations goals and action straddle between social service agencies and social movements. Sociological literature on participation in social movements and collective action provide the analytical framework for this research. I interviewed eight people from a social change organization in Florida. From these interviews it became clear that involvement in the social change organization is based upon the way social networks and frame alignment interacts with costs and benefits considerations in the decision to participate. With this understanding, we are better able to entice participation in these organizations and hence improve the quality of life for people in society.
