Notes

Abstract: This thesis analyzes the classical symposium in three works, Plato's Symposium, Xenophon's Symposium, and the Cena Trimalchionis section of Petronius Arbiter's Satyrica. It delivers a brief overview of classical symposia and divides the symposium into five sections: accommodation and sympotic space, food and alcohol, performance, guests and their interactions, and the reception of the symposium. It examines the use of these five elements in the primary texts. Its conclusion compares and contrasts the symposia and the author's use of each element.
