Abstract: In this thesis I explore the spaces between the artistic genres of Sculpture and Performance Art with the ultimate goal of analyzing the meaning and potential of "performing sculpture" as a sub-genre. To achieve this I will analyze art historical examples of works that combine performance and sculpture. First, I will discuss the function of works that combine sculpture and performance, yet do not fit the category of performing sculpture, using grammatical structures as a frame. This serves to situate examples of performing sculpture within art history, while also serving as a basis of comparison. Second, I will contrast the grammatical function of examples of performing sculpture with the previously analyzed works. Next, I will discuss the meanings of individual works of performing sculpture, explore their art historical significance, and contrast their differing functions. This establishes a continuum of performing sculptures, rather than a rigid definition. Finally, I will analyze different tactics and methods for introducing interactivity into artworks and discuss my own artworks in terms of performance, sculpture, interactive art, and gender politics.
