Abstract: This thesis explores the effectiveness of community land trusts (CLTs) in both providing a permanent source of affordable housing in the urban United States and preventing the displacement of low-income residents in areas undergoing gentrification. Beginning with an overview of U.S. federal housing programs, the thesis proceeds to a discussion of these projects' weaknesses, especially those related to the displacement of poor urbanites. Using three case studies of community land trusts in Boston, Burlington, and New York, I will analyze their usefulness in relation to affordable housing stocks and preventing displacement. The thesis will conclude with the implications of CLTs for social sustainability and equity.
