Notes

Abstract: Some recent literature on gender and development makes the claim that land rights are the most important goal to achieve in improving women's situation. However, the difficulty of working towards achieving women's land rights is well documented. Instead of focusing solely on the obstacles, this thesis seeks to illuminate paths to women's land rights across the developing world. Different designs for land rights systems are compared for their applicability to different places, their potential impact on land use, and their ability to provide security of tenure for women. Hope for the future lies in breaking down the barriers that currently obstruct the path to well-being, equity, and empowerment for women, through people working collectively to improve women") rights to land.
