Notes

Abstract: In order to create a more professional and nuanced performance of Winterreise the cycle must be carefully studied and prepared. This preparation of the cycle requires the utilization of outside sources as well as personal study. In this preparation and study of the cycle it becomes clear that no one interpretation exists. Some see the Wanderer, the main character and narrator of Winterreise, as a man who slowly slips into madness after his love leaves him, while others see him as a man who drives himself away from a painful event into absolute obscurity and alienation. Still others view the suffering, madness, and isolation of the Wanderer as the hallmarks of Romanticism, and that the Wanderer himself is some romantic hero. It is only by weighing these, and other, interpretations against each other that one can create a professional, focused, and nuanced performance.
