Abstract: This thesis details the process of composing the thesis composition "Brass Quintet," submitted for completion of Kevin James'undergraduate degree, and performed on April 21st. "Brass Quintet" is a composition in three parts arranged for two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba. The purpose of this essay is to describe the scholarship that inspired the conception and goal of the work, the means by which this goal was achieved, and an analysis of the piece itself. The essay addresses musicology done by Theodor Adorno and Rose Subotnick. Using this work, I constructed a method for addressing social and historical realities of music through composition. Also, the essay incorporates work done by philosophers Kendall Walton and Thomas Clifton. I use this work to get a general feel for how music is perceived by the listener. Finally, this essay sets forth a set of aesthetic guidelines and demonstrates how they are incorporated into the musical composition.
