Notes

Abstract: The relationship between Judaism and the Second Commandment is reflected in Jewish Art. By understanding the roots and reasons for the Second Commandment one can better understand the unique nature of Jewish art. The myth of aniconism (the idea that Jews do not create images) also has a profound effect on the Jewish artist and has its roots in the Second Commandment. Through examination of ideas of Visual Culture and interpretation of the idea of the image one can better understand the Jewish artist and the field of Jewish art. My own work on the Passover Seder takes all this into account. Through my work I hope to give the viewer a glimpse into my interpretation of Judaism, which has been shaped culturally, but also by the Second Commandment.
