Abstract: One of the popularly held conceptions of art is that it is a reflection of the society in which it was created. But what happens when art, containing its own system of languages, icons, and idiosyncrasies, reflects upon itself? The art made for this thesis considers some of the established historical and contemporary conventions of art, in an attempt to expose aspects of the discipline we take for granted. In relation to my art, I examine artists whose work addresses similar themes, including Louise Lawler, Ellen Harvey, Daniel Buren, Vitaly Komar, and Alexander Melamid. I approach traditional media such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture, using humor and self-reflection in order to expose the systems, rules, and biases that shape our understanding of the discipline.
