Abstract: The purpose of this thesis was to examine the leading causes of mortality in the United States, the leading contributing risk factors of these conditions, and the current clinical treatments for amelioration and prevention of them. Some of the major topics of discussion include cardiovascular disease, malignant neoplasms, and cerebrovascular accidents. Their major risk factors include, hyperphagia, hyperlipidemia, dyslipoproteinemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and the metabolic syndrome. Current clinical therapies treating these conditions include lifestyle alterations in the realm of diet, exercise, and nutraceutical supplementation. Conclusive findings from current research accompany the discussions, and further investigation into these modalities is warranted.
