Abstract: This thesis explores the concept of Jewish heritage and culture through its food. Judaism is an ethnic identity as well as a religious one, and one of the main centering points for the Jewish identity is that of food. Recipes are passed through generations of family and friends, meals large and small become byways of family history and Jewish culture. The table becomes a gathering place in the most important Jewish spherethe home. Kosher theory, daily practices, and personal accounts and stories from patrons and staff of Jo-El�s Kosher Market provide a detailed look at food as a central part of Jewish heritage and identity.
