Notes

Abstract: I have designed this thesis so that I may study and practice subversive and revelatory artistic projects in an effort to reconfigure spatial production as an empowering, playful experience. I contend that art-interventions in public space can effectively function as tools for critical insight, creative appropriation and direct re-aestheticization. For my research I have drawn mostly from histories related to Dada, Situationist International, Minimalism, Earthworks, Conceptualism, and contemporary public art. In addition I have studied the spatial theories of Guy Debord and Henri Lefebvre in order to develop a critical analysis of art in public space. With all this in mind, I have set out to create various public situations through installation art. The projects represent an effort to demonstrate how space may be dtourned, or subverted in a way that reveals and alters some form of latent significance therein.
