Notes

Abstract: This thesis investigated the various reasons why some adult adoptees choose to seek out their biological family and others do not. Seven adoptees were given in-depth interviews, and previous works on adoption and the decision to search were reviewed. The data suggested that an important factor affecting an adoptee's decision regarding search may be her or his satisfaction with the ability of personal narratives to address their questions and concerns about their biological heritage. Interestingly, this research also suggests that adoptees constructed these narratives from both fact and fiction, creating stories around whatever information they may have to satisfy their questions.
