Abstract: |
Henequen haciendas are an important part of the Yucatecan landscape. The henequen boom from 1860-1915 represents a period of economic success for the Yucatn peninsula; however, this time also saw the rise of debt-peonage as a means to attach workers to the henequen haciendas, creating a system of oppression. The study of the cultural landscape of the henequen haciendas provides a way to better understand the social complexity present on these haciendas. Here I present a discussion of the history of henequen haciendas, a survey of research conducted on these haciendas, applicable theoretical models, and a discussion of the components of the hacienda. Lastly, I discuss ways in which further research could be conducted so as to further reveal the intricate and recursive nature of the henequen haciendas. |
