Notes

Abstract: This project is a series of paintings concerned with negotiations of place and belonging within shifting domestic spheres. In response to my frequent physical relocation, recontextualizing the concept of 'home' has become necessary for resolving issues of interaction between people and places. These forty-one paintings function as 'living arrangements' which synthesize real, remembered, and imagined psychic spaces to explore the expressive power of inanimate objects when attention is paid to their specific positioning. While keeping a visual record of my constant relocation, this work addresses problems of human miscommunication by presenting conversations between furniture figures and the architectural elements which frame them. Drawing from the work of Ida Applebroog, Sophie Calle, Ilya Kabakov, and Sigmund Freud's Uncanny, Ranging Room is an installation of paintings which highlight the significance of context in expanding interpretations of 'home.'
