Abstract: At the turn of the fourteenth century, a trend toward secularization was seen in the city-states of Italy, known as humanism. This thesis will examine the motivations and results of this movement, and will attempt to provide a critical analysis of its innovations and central concepts. Through the examination of three key figures, it will discuss the similarities and differences between humanists, and will seek to determine the significance of humanism as a movement.
