Abstract: An amphiphilic molecule 4- {(E)-2-I-(l 1-bromo-undecyl)-pyridin-4-yl-vinyl}-phetiol is designed and synthesized with the intention to incorporate the molecule in a organic thinfilm system. Successful synthesis of I-(10-bromodecyl)-4-methyl-pyridine, 10-(4-methyl-pyridin-1-yl)-decane-l-thiol and 4-{(E)-2-l-(ll-mercapto-undecyl)-pyridin-4-yl-vinyl}-phenol permits the creation of a monolayer by a multi-step mechanism. The compounds form a self-assembled, NLO-active, thin film system through chemisoption of the sulfur atom to a gold surface. Upon the creation, the thin film is characterized by AFM, UV- Vis spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic contact angle measurments.
