Notes

Abstract: This thesis compares reproductive rights in the United States and France since the colonial and pre-Revolutionary periods, with an emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Fundamental similarities between each country's early reproductive rights movement are discussed. Furthermore, the role of the state and its influence on reproductive policies, specifically birth control and abortion, are analyzed in France and the United States. Each chapter explores state practices regarding fertility control as well as the impact of supporters and opponents of women's reproductive rights. It will be shown that throughout the last two hundred years, state intervention has hindered as well as helped women's access to abortion and birth control.
