Abstract: The character of Odysseus appears throughout classical literature with varying traits. He is a tactician and a warrior in the works of Homer, a demagogue in the Greek tragedies and a clever rhetorician in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Although Odysseus' traits may vary slightly depending on the author and his purpose--so that he might appear either noble or base--his character must conform to a basic tradition so that he is able to be recognizable to the audience of the work. This thesis analyzes the characterization of Odysseus in a diversity of classical works, along with the authors' use of Odysseus as a recognizable individual in order to fulfill a specific purpose.
