Notes

Abstract: This thesis examines the possibilities for human connection between Gerty MacDowell and Leopold Bloom in the Nausicaa episode of James Joyce's Ulysses. The first chapter examines the language of the episode, focusing on abrupt shifts in narrative voice. The second chapter makes distinctions between the shifts and provides reasons for them. Gerty and Bloom are shown to be inside personal narratives that can be manipulated to achieve personal goals. Strategies for narrative manipulation are examined. The third chapter considers what Joyce's use of personal narratives says about the possibility of an objective perception of the world and the possibility of true human connection.
