Notes

Abstract: In my thesis, I explore Christa Wolf 's Kindheitsmuster within the context of GDR society in the 1970s. Chapter One concerns Wolf 's narrative technique, and the way that she uses split perspectives as a way of recovering past voices. The split perspectives offered by her use of second and third person narrative technique evoke a sense of alienation, while at the same time, these techniques are Wolf's attempt to re-acquaint herself with her past. Chapter Two concerns the repetition of patterns of behavior throughout several generations of Wolf's family. This chapter also examines the protagonist's own ingrained patterns of behavior, specifically in relation to her body. In the third chapter, I examine the ways that Wol'fs adherence to socialist ideology influences her portrayal of characters in the text. This chapter also deals with Wolf 's critical reception, both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
